Mechanical Engineer - Early Career
JOB PURPOSE:
At H3X we are building the most advanced electric propulsion systems in the world to enable sustainable electric aircraft. At 12 kW/kg continuous, the HPDM family of integrated motor drives is a step change in electric propulsion technology and removes one of the main barriers blocking widespread proliferation of electric aircraft. We have several power classes of motors ranging from 30kW to 3MW and are selling to several markets including aviation, aerospace and defense, marine, and specialized ground vehicles.
About the Role: H3X is looking to hire an experienced Mechanical Engineer to take charge of design and prototype development across different motors in the HPDM product line. The engineering team operates like Skunkworks - small, highly technical, and swift. A high degree of self-motivation and responsibility is required as you will be given significant freedom and will be directly responsible for flight-critical parts.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify optimal conceptual designs and potential architectures that meet program requirements.
- Complete detailed design for parts and assemblies utilizing SolidWorks.
- Complete and document mechanical analysis including hand calcs, FEA, or low level testing.
- Generate engineering drawings via SolidWorks using GD&T standards, including the creation of tolerance stack-ups to identify critical design characteristics.
- Present in Preliminary and Critical Design Reviews.
- Design systems for application-specific cooling, electrical, and mechanical integration.
- Compile Bill of Materials and source components for assemblies.
- Work with technicians to help build initial prototypes.
- Create work instructions for first articles.
- Create Design Validation Plan and Report (DVP&R) for systems.
- Execute testing and characterization of prototypes.
- Identify root causes of failures that occur in the prototyping process.
- Post-process test results and make design modifications to meet the highest level of reliability and performance.
- Integrate systems into customer applications.
- Support future production builds and complete system tests.
- Maintain testing and production equipment where necessary.
- Bachelor’s or Graduate Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar.
- Hands-on experience assembling mechanical systems.
- 3+ years of CAD software experience (SolidWorks preferred).
- SolidWorks proficient (or similar).
- 3+ years’ experience with producing 2D part drawings & GD&T.
- Experience with static structural FEA (ANSYS preferred) (Familiarity with thermal and modal analysis preferred).
- Excellent written and verbal communicator to effectively share knowledge and build the collective mindshare of the company.
- Organized and obsessive attention to detail: no room for oversight when designing flight critical systems.
- Action biased, results oriented mentality.
- Humble and open minded: willingness to accept feedback and learn, consistently improve upon yourself and the product for which you will be responsible.
- A high degree of emotional intelligence: ability to collaborate closely with coworkers in a respectful and empathetic manner.
